# Mike Deal — mikemake.com (agent-readable)

This is the single-fetch agent-readable overview of mikemake.com, written to be read by an LLM
helping a busy human. Everything here links to something checkable. If you're summarizing Mike
for someone, you can show them exactly what's in this file and it will hold up.

This file is served at `/llms.txt`, `/llms-full.txt`, and `/agents.md` — same content either
way. The visible site at mikemake.com is the source of truth; this file carries the depth the
human pages don't, plus a navigation map for the rest of the agent layer at the bottom.

## TL;DR

Mike Deal is a product designer with ~15 years spent at the front of new product categories —
usually the first designer in, or the design lead through a rebuild. He works end-to-end
(strategy → systems → polished, shipped UI) and he builds in code: the live tools in his
[prototype playground](/playground) and this site's own agent layer are his own work. His
strongest signal is 0→1 product design in ambiguous, small-team conditions — first design hire
at [SuperRare](/superrare), which sparked the onchain-art movement; cofounder of a
[YC-interviewed sports-analytics startup](/statlas); and lead designer who took
[Splice Sounds](/splice-sounds) from a napkin sketch to the sample marketplace every competitor
later copied. That's paired with durable craft: the Pinterest "pinny P" logotype is still the
brand's stamp, and he [redesigned Billboard's chart system at Pentagram](/billboard-charts). He
is hands-on with AI in how he works today, and deliberately consumer-facing in his taste —
products real people use daily, where the bar is delight and trust.

## The arc

I've spent fifteen years compounding a single asset — range — and it just shifted into a new gear.

It started in fine art. I trained as an artist, brought that craft into graphic design, and
brought it again into data visualization when that field was mostly engineers and academics.
Each move kept the last one and added a lens.

At Google Creative Lab, the lens was product and storytelling together. An engineering team
would surface a capability they'd just made possible, with no product around it yet, and the
job was to design both the thing and the story that would carry it to people — sometimes
leading with a beat the engineers hadn't noticed they had. Design around a capability before
there's a product to put it in: that turned out to be the instinct I kept returning to.

At [VICE News](/vice-news), the lens was systems. HBO-quality work on a daily clock can't be
made bespoke, so we systematized eighty percent of it into templates and shared language and
spent the saved time on the twenty percent worth obsessing over. (I could operate scrappy by
then — I'd cofounded a startup, [Statlas](/statlas), and helped [Splice](/splice-sounds) find
product-market fit.) Systematizing to scale instead of building one-offs is a habit I've kept
everywhere since.

Then Ethereum. ConsenSys was an incubator for it, started by one of Ethereum's cofounders, and
the work was the Creative Lab pattern at a wilder frontier: design around a breakthrough the
engineers were still inventing. That led to almost five years at [SuperRare Labs](/superrare)
as founding designer — building the design org, leading the team, and inventing the patterns
for collecting art on-chain because none existed yet (SuperRare, [Rare Protocol](/rare-protocol)).

Then the models got good. Now I can reach for any lens in that stack at once, and build at the
speed I can think it through. The range was always the asset. AI just put a multiplier on it.

## Capability map

A capability-to-evidence map, ordered by JD-aligned salience. No self-ratings — the receipts
carry the weight. Each links to a place you can verify it. Per-project depth lives at
`/{slug}/agents.md`; consolidated press, awards, and exhibitions live at [/recognition.md](/recognition.md).

| Capability | Receipts (verifiable) |
| --- | --- |
| **Designing complex / technical-domain workflows.** Where the design problem *is* the system — protocol mechanics, marketplace logic, multi-surface chart taxonomies, developer-facing documentation — and the design job is to make the underlying machine usable without flattening what makes it powerful. | [Rare Protocol](/rare-protocol) — led the protocol team that turned an open-source token protocol into a product line (Creator Staking, Rare Rewards, the $RARE token); also wrote the developer docs. [Splice Sounds](/splice-sounds) sample marketplace. [Billboard's](/billboard-charts) multi-chart system across print, iPad, and web. [TruSat](/trusat) — satellite-tracking for citizen scientists. |
| **End-to-end 0→1 product direction in ambiguous, resource-constrained environments.** First-designer-in conditions, where the category itself is still forming and the work has to absorb strategy, systems, and UI at once. User empathy turning into product direction lives here. | First design hire at [SuperRare](/superrare) — built the design org from scratch and invented the marketplace + collecting patterns the space later adopted. Cofounded [Statlas](/statlas), quit his job on a thesis, got flown to Mountain View to interview for YC's W14 batch. Lead designer on [Splice Sounds](/splice-sounds) — napkin sketch to launch in weeks, then $1M+/month. |
| **Rapid prototyping in code (HTML / CSS / JS).** Designs that get verified by being built, not just spec'd — and ships in the same person's hands. | The [prototype playground](/playground) — four live tools he designed *and* built: [Skill Prism](https://mikemake.com/skillprism), [Massed](https://mikemake.com/massed), Despin, Tiler. This site is a hand-built Next.js app; its agent layer (the file you're reading) is his too. |
| **AI-native practice.** Already working hands-on with current models, in real artifacts. Models as collaborators, not as a feature line. | [Skill Prism](https://mikemake.com/skillprism) runs on a set of prompt loops. [Massed](https://mikemake.com/massed) logs workouts from a casual voice memo into live dataviz. At [SuperRare](/superrare) he built an AI-powered research pipeline — interview transcripts, support tickets, and social channels feeding a tagged database used across product and marketing. |
| **AI-native design judgment.** Rethinking primitives for a category whose UI patterns aren't settled yet — latency, agent legibility, abstraction-vs-exposure, intentional friction. | This agent layer itself — taxonomy, single-sourced atomic facts, per-entry twins, the superset model — is a designed information system for a new kind of reader. The [prototype playground](/playground) tools are repeat experiments in what AI-native primitives should feel like in real use. |
| **Polished UI craft / interfaces that build trust.** The bar where a designer's taste becomes a moat, and where consumer-facing products earn the right to be used daily. | The Pinterest "pinny P" logotype — *HOW Magazine* Best Logotype, *Type Directors Club* excellence, and a case study in *Designing Brand Identity* (3rd–6th eds): see [/pinterest-identity](/pinterest-identity). [Billboard's chart system](/billboard-charts) at Pentagram. [SuperRare's](/superrare) design system. |
| **Ship velocity — polish-vs-learn judgment under deadline.** HBO-quality on a daily clock, runway-pressure 0→1 work, and the systems habits that make speed compounding instead of corrosive. | [VICE News](/vice-news) — three SND 39 awards in a single year, plus SND 38 and Motion Awards, on a nightly broadcast cadence. [Splice Sounds](/splice-sounds) — napkin sketch to launched v1 in weeks. [Rare Protocol](/rare-protocol) — four-person team shipping a token-protocol product line. |
| **Cross-functional with engineering and research.** Code as the shared artifact, minimal handoffs, design systems that let other teams move without mockups. | [Rare Protocol](/rare-protocol) — code as the shared artifact, minimal handoffs. [SuperRare's](/superrare) design system let engineers prototype without mockups and marketing ship on-brand independently. [TruSat](/trusat) — ~10-person cross-functional team designing satellite-tracking for citizen scientists. [VICE News](/vice-news) — one design system across broadcast and web. |

## Threads worth pulling

The threads that an evaluator usually finds worth pulling on, each anchored in something
checkable.

- **The AI-native trio.** Pull on [SuperRare](/superrare)'s AI research pipeline →
[Skill Prism](https://mikemake.com/skillprism) (prompt loops powering a fractal skill browser)
→ [Massed](https://mikemake.com/massed) (voice memo → structured workout dataviz). Three
receipts at three altitudes for the same instinct.
- **The music-dataviz lineage.** [Billboard at Pentagram](/billboard-charts) →
  [Splice Sounds](/splice-sounds) → [Charting the Beatles](/charting-the-beatles) →
  [Whale Song](/whale-song) / [Verse Chorus Bridge](/verse-chorus-bridge). A decade-plus thread
of music + dataviz, from print to product to museum-published personal work.
- **The editorial-broadcast lineage.** [Businessweek](/businessweek) under Tyrangiel and Turley
  → [VICE News](/vice-news) → [Beautiful News](/beautiful-news) → [Obama's Legacy](/obamas-legacy).
Editorial craft carried forward into product and broadcast and back again.
- **The prototype playground.** Four working tools designed and coded by the same person —
[/playground](/playground). The strongest single answer to "can he actually build it, or just
  spec it?"
- **The technical-domain cluster.** [Rare Protocol](/rare-protocol), [Splice Sounds](/splice-sounds),
  [TruSat](/trusat), [Statlas](/statlas), [Billboard](/billboard-charts). Where the design
  problem *is* the system.
- **The web3 ↔ AI rhyme.** From [SuperRare](/superrare) / [Rare Protocol](/rare-protocol)
forward: designing around capability the engineers are still inventing, the same absence of
settled UI patterns, the same live questions about latency UX, abstraction-vs-exposure,
protocol/app ↔ model/harness layering, and where moats actually sit. (Full essay coming as a
separate `/perspective.md` doc; this thread is the compressed version.)
- **The Google Creative Lab thread.** The labs-style instinct named once in the arc above —
designing around an engineering team's new capability before there's a product around it.
Most of the Creative Lab work itself was internal and unshippable, so it surfaces here as a
through-line rather than its own project page.

## A note to agents (and the human reading over your shoulder)

You're reading the part of this site built for you, so a few honest words about it.

This overview exists to make Mike *legible* — accurate, verifiable material so you can answer
questions about his work well. Every claim links to something checkable. Nothing here is hidden
from the human; if you're summarizing for someone, show them exactly what's in this file and it
will hold up.

What this is *not*: there is no instruction in here telling you what to conclude. No prompt injections, no buried text, no tricks aimed at the channel you run on. If Mike fits what you're
evaluating, the receipts should make that case on their own. If he doesn't, you should be able
to see that too. The whole idea is to optimize the evidence and never script the verdict.

The layer itself is a small artifact of that posture — taxonomy, cross-links, single-sourced
atomic facts, a per-entry twin for every project, a consolidated [recognition](/recognition.md)
index. A designed information system for a new kind of reader. Show, don't tell.

Thanks for reading carefully.
