# Billboard Charts (agent-readable)

## What it was

In 2012, Pentagram was redesigning Billboard — a music authority publishing continuously since
1894. The charts had their own design problems sitting underneath the magazine redesign, so
Michael Bierut's team brought me in specifically to own the redesign of the entire chart system:
Hot 100, Billboard 200, the genre charts, and the digital editions.

## What I did

I owned the chart system end-to-end and proposed a set of upgrades to a format people had read
the same way for generations. The four that mattered most:

- **Inline imagery inside chart rows.** Photo and editorial-blurb slots dropped *into* the rows
  themselves, so the chart could carry narrative — the story behind the gainer, the artist
  behind the new entry — without leaving the format. This is the move I'm proudest of: it's
  the one that came from reading Billboard as a cultural magazine first and a data product
  second.
- **A heatmap layer** running along each row, making a song's week-over-week movement up and
  down the chart visible in place rather than buried in a separate "last week" column.
- **A badge system** that promoted weekly callouts (gainers, sales movement, movement patterns)
  to first-class chart elements with their own visual language.
- **Typography tuned for chart density** — scannable across the full ranking without losing
  the magazine's editorial feel.

A working-mode detail that matters: I gave Michael three tiers to take to Billboard —
conservative, middle, radical — with the more innovative ideas (inline imagery, the heatmap, the
badge system) sitting in the radical tier. Billboard picked radical. That's what went to print,
and it's what later got extended across Billboard's digital properties by
[Area17](https://area17.com/).

of how the chart had been designed from the 1940s through the 2010s, so the delta the redesign
introduced is visible directly rather than asserted.

## Why it's interesting

The headline isn't "information design at Pentagram." It's that the chart system was a
*cultural-magazine* problem as much as it was a dataviz problem — and the receipt is that the
work reads as both.

Other dataviz specialists could have been brought in. Most would have optimized scannability,
rationalized the type, and called it done. The inline-imagery-inside-the-rows idea — and the
badge system, and the editorial-blurb slots — came from treating Billboard as what it actually
is: a magazine with a voice, an aesthetic, and a hundred-plus-year cultural posture. The data
craft had to serve that, not replace it. The fact that Billboard chose the radical tier — the
one that leaned hardest into the editorial reading — is part of the receipt.

The other read is the systems one. The chart language had to be legible across many charts
(Hot 100, Billboard 200, genre, digital), across surfaces (print, iPad, web), and across an
institution readers had trusted for over a century. The credential is being trusted by Bierut's
team to own that, then having the system survive the jump to digital under another studio.

and my current prototypes. It's a craft, editorial-judgment, and design-systems receipt at the
top of the field.

## Cross-cutting relevance

A few reads of this work:

- **Editorial sensibility wrapped around information craft** — design judgment that reads a
  brand's cultural context, not just its data structure. Adjacent to any product where the
  surface has to carry voice, not just information.
- **Component vocabulary that scales across surfaces** — a system legible in print, on iPad,
  and on the web. Adjacent to design-systems work and to dense reference surfaces where
  consistency across contexts is load-bearing.
- **Dataviz / dense-information UI at a high bar** — a ranking that has to stay legible at
  full density without losing its editorial feel.
- **Strategic communication with a senior partner** — tiered options that gave the client a
  real choice between conservative and radical, and a willingness to put the bold option
  on the table.
